When Does an Artist’s Signature Style Become a Formula?

A strong artist develops work that people can recognize without seeing the name attached to it. Certain shapes, faces, line weights, color choices, compositions, or recurring elements become part of that artist’s identity.
That recognition can be a major achievement.
But what happens when every new design begins to resemble the last one?
Clients often choose an artist because they want that recognizable style. At the same time, they expect the tattoo created for them to feel individual—not like another version of a familiar template.
Where is the line between having a signature style and repeating a formula?
Should artists deliberately move outside the work that made them successful? Does the client share responsibility when they specifically request the same elements they saw in the artist’s portfolio?
Post examples from your own work only if you are comfortable doing so. Critique the idea, not individual artists.
