Every fact here is traced to the organisation that actually sets the rule, quoted with its citation, and carries the date we last checked it. Where the answer differs between the United States, Canada and Mexico we give all of them — because a page written for one country is wrong for the others, and most pages do not say which one they mean.

Our own data on 48 piercing types says healing runs from 4 to 52 weeks — and almost every regret traces back to one of these four going unasked.

It depends entirely on which country you are in, and the difference is bigger than almost anyone realises. In most of the United States there is no waiting period at all. In Canada it is three months. In Mexico it is twelve.

Your tattoos are almost certainly fine — the risk is real but very rare and, in every published case, minor and fully recovered. Your piercings are the practical problem: they normally have to come out, and if one is still healing that needs planning rather than panic.

Can I get tattooed over a mole?

Tattoos do not cause skin cancer. But ink over a mole can hide one, and a melanoma found late is a far worse problem than a design that has to go round something. Do not tattoo over a mole, and leave clear skin around it.

Allergies and reactions — ink and jewelry
Red ink causes more reactions than every other color combined, and unlike most allergies it can appear weeks, months or years after the tattoo healed. For jewelry the culprit is almost always nickel — and the fix is knowing which standards actually mean something.

Can my employer really make me cover my tattoos?
Tattoos at work — what is actually enforceable
In the United States, usually yes — tattoos are not a protected class and a dress code can require covering them. But there are real exceptions, the biggest is religious, and since 2023 it has become considerably harder for an employer to refuse. "It is not our image" is not a defense.

What can I actually still do while this heals?
Swimming, the gym, sleeping and sex while healing
More than you think. The gym is fine — the professional body says so in those words. Water is the real restriction, and there is a practical way round it. And the question about sex has a plain answer that nobody says out loud.

What happens to a tattoo over ten years, and can I get rid of it?
The long term — fading, touch-ups and removal
Tattoos fade, spread and change, and most of that is sun. Removal is harder, longer and less complete than anyone selling it will tell you — complete clearance averages about half, and for white or flesh-toned ink a laser can make it permanently worse.

Is it risky to get tattooed on holiday?
Travel — getting work done abroad, and healing away from home
Not because it is abroad. The evidence points at the setting, not the country — professional studios show no proven increase in hepatitis C risk, while amateur and improvised tattooing clearly does. The real holiday problem is healing: sun, sea and pools are exactly what a new piece cannot have.
